Open an ING Direct account, you get one of the nations highest interest rates (3%) for a online savings account.

Better yet, open with a referral link, you get that high interest rate plus $25. Once your account is activated, your referrals to friends and family are worth $10 each for each person who signs up. Not a bad deal.

Accounts are FDIC insured, and no minimum deposit required. You can literally open the account for $1, and still make $25. Then sign up 25 friends for an additional $250. After a year, the interest will add an extra $8. That's $283 for doing practically nothing. The rate is very competitive even with CDs, but your money is always available and no penalties for early withdrawal.

There are a few higher interest rates out there (bankrate.com), but ING has one of the best web interfaces and great customer support.
